Sangha Night - The Nature of the Mind 3

Throughout the autumn, we will be exploring a range of Buddhist teachings looking at the nature of our minds and different ways of working with our mental states.

Of fear, anxiety and other demons

The Buddha talked of fear as a thorn lodged deep in the heart, that makes us run in all directions. By trying to alleviate our insecurity and confusion we can often create trouble for ourselves and others. Following our exploration of the Nature of the Mind, we'll be looking at feeling as a crucial aspect of human experience and how it shapes the way we perceive the world around us and ultimately our relationship with Reality.

Sangha Weekend Retreat - Towards Insight

The Anapanasati Sutta (Mindfulness of Breathing) is the Buddha’s simplest set of instructions on how we can move systematically through the whole of our experience, sharpening our awareness as we go, until we reach full and complete enlightenment.

On this weekend we’ll explore the Sutta through input, guided practice, enquiry into what we are noticing in our direct experience, and devotion. We’ll see how the instructions, applied to our own unique conditioning, provides a rich backdrop to understanding and truly knowing ourselves, others and reality more fully.

Led by Singhashri.

This retreat will be held at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December - please attend for both days.

Arrive from 10.00 a.m. both days for a 10.30 start. Finish will be at 4.30 each day.

Please bring vegan food to share for lunch.

Suggested donation of £50 but please come and give what you can.

Global Climate Strike

Global Climate/Earth Strike Friday 20th September

This strike has emerged out of the school climate strikes initiated by Greta Thunberg. Many of the younger generation are now calling on all of us to participate in these strikes as the Climate Emergency is not just going to affect the young.

We have decided to close the Buddhist Centre on the morning of 20th September and hold a 4-hour meditation from 8.00 a.m. to midday in Old Market Square to show our solidarity with all those striking around the world. At 12.00, we will join a rally with all the other participating groups in Nottingham also being held in Old Market Square.

Please consider joining the strike and coming and joining us in Old Market Square. There is a list for those who can come on the notice board at the Centre or you can just turn up on the day.

For further information about the Strikes, see

Sangha Night - A Special Gathering of the Sangha

Twice a year, we have a Special Gathering of the Sangha - a chance for the whole Sangha to come together for the evening.

On this gathering, we want to create a celebratory and joyful atmosphere amongst us and have asked Bodhinaya, Paul and Claire to talk on the theme of ‘What I appreciate about the Nottingham Buddhist Centre’. Then there will be groups where we can all reflect on what we have gained from, and appreciate about, the Centre.

We will start early (at 6.15 p.m.) with what used to affectionately be known as ‘spud night’ - i.e. the Centre will provide baked potatoes for all and everybody else brings other vegan food to share.

Then at 7.30 p.m. there will be meditation and the talks and groups.

We would like as many people as possible to come for this important event.

Friday Daytime Course Change your Mind, Change the World - An Introduction to Buddhism and Meditation

This eight-week course is an ideal introduction to both meditation and Buddhism and is the best way to get a taste of what we do at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre. You will learn both of the meditation practices that we teach - the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana. We will also explore Buddhism by looking at the Three Jewels - Buddha, Dharma and Sangha - and the Threefold Path of Ethics, Meditation and Wisdom.

NB - Please be aware that, due to the Global Climate Strike taking place on Friday 20th September, the Buddhist Centre will be closed on that day (we will be staging an all-day meditation in Old Market Square as part of the strike). This means that there will be no class on September 20th.

The course runs for 8 weeks and will finish on Friday 8th November. There is also a Day Retreat at the Buddhist Centre as part of the course on Sunday 27th October from 10.00 - 4.00 p.m.

No prior experience is required.

Sangha Night - The Nature of the Mind 2

Throughout the autumn, we will be exploring a range of Buddhist teachings looking at the nature of our minds and different ways of working with our mental states.

Last week, we looked at an important teaching of the Buddha on papanca or mental proliferation contained in the Honeyball Sutta (see here for a translation). In that, the Buddha shows how we move away from our primary experience into a secondary reality of proliferated thoughts and ideas and how these distorted interpretations of reality can lead to interpersonal and social conflict.

This week, we will look at ways we can work with this tendency to mental proliferation and bring ourselves back to our primary reality.

It runs for 6 weeks, ending on Tuesday 15th October. And there is a Day Retreat at the Buddhist Centre to conclude the course on Sunday 27th October from 10.00 - 4.00 p.m.
