Young Buddhists Group

We’re Nottingham Buddhist Centre’s young Buddhist group. We get together monthly to meditate and practice the dharma together. That means meditation, tea, and talking about life’s biggest questions from a Buddhist perspective, and sometimes vegan cake. We try to approach things like ethics and meditation in ways that are practical but rooted in deep principles.

This month - January - we’re going to start looking at how we can apply Buddhism to some of the issues we face in the modern world. There are all sorts of new challenges thrown up by technology and the particular culture we live in, from stress and sleep loss to political polarisation. Though Buddhism arose in ancient India it still speaks to these problems. We’ll be looking at some of these topics in more detail later in the year as well. See you soon!

Sangha Night - The Buddha Goes to his Death - Parinirvana Talk Three

We are starting our Sangha night programme in 2019 with a series of events leading up to the Parinirvana Festival in February. The Parinirvana marks the final passing away of the Buddha when his physical body ceases to exist.

We shall have a series of talks looking at the Mahaparinibbana Sutta which is an account of the Buddha’s last few months as he goes to his death. It is one of the great Buddhist texts and gives a moving and illuminating picture of who the Buddha actually was and of his complete fearlessness and compassion as he prepares for his death.

The festival also gives us a chance to explore our own thoughts and feelings about death, a topic of central concern that touches us all.

As part of our exploration of the Buddha’s Parinirvana, where he goes to his death, we will be interviewing Satyamegha, a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order who works as a chaplain in a hospice in Chesterfield.

What does her work involve and what exactly goes on in a hospice? How can we support people in the last stages of their life? How can Buddhist practice help us to be with people who are moving towards their death? And what lessons might we learn for our own life?

One of the major Buddhist festivals, Parinirvana Day marks the final passing away of the Buddha. It is a time to reflect on the nature of the Buddha and also on our own impermanence and mortality.

This will be a morning of meditation, recitation of the Mahaparinibbana Sutta and puja.

If you wish to place photos of those you know who have died on the shrine, you are very welcome to do so. There will also be an opportunity to remember them during the puja.

Sangha Night - How to really change the world 

This evening is inspired by Sangharakshita's 1976 talk 'Evolution or Extinction: a Buddhist Response to World Problems'. After a gratitude-bhavana we’ll explore suffering in the modern world, and how best to cure it. We’ll explore the case for the evolution of not just individual but collective consciousness, and effective sangha’s crucial role in that. There’ll be stories of people around the Triratna world whose lives have been transformed by the Dharma, and invite to you to contribute to FutureDharma Fund so as to reach even more.

Led by Amalavajra, a former investment banker, and Jai, a former bankrupt and rough sleeper, who both live and work at Adhisthana.

Dancing the Unknown - Moving Body, Heart and Mind

How can we find stillness?

In the middle of our lives, where so often we feel pulled about by inner and outer events … where demands seem to come from all sides continuously … where feelings, impressions, ideas, even ideals keep us charged and running … Where is stillness to be found?

Is it just essential to pull down the shutters at times, totally withdraw, keep everything out - or are there other possibilities? Are movement and stillness opposites? 

In this workshop we will have phases of movement, and phases of meditation, following on from one another. Easy physical improvisational exercises will help us to become more present and mindful, and at the same time open us up to more light and joy. This will then enrich our attention within and outside of meditation to be saturated with deeper interest and the spirit of discovery. 

The workshop is called ‘Dancing the Unknown’ because we discover that every movement we make leads us to somewhere we do not know!

Jayachitta has been interested in the intrinsic connection between joy, freedom and meditation for many years - on and off the cushion. She particularly enjoys deepening this research with other meditators, and keeps on learning and discovering more aspects of this work.

This workshop is open to all, whether you have previous experience in meditation, or dance, or improvisation or not. It invites all levels of ability.

This is a two-day workshop Saturday and Sunday 30/31st March 10.30 - 4.30 both days.

Suggested Donation £65

Please bring vegetarian/vegan food to share for lunch.

'To Place the Heart Upon' - A Sangha retreat at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre

'To place the heart upon' is the literal translation of the term sraddha, more often translated just as faith. It plays a key role in the Buddhist life and suggests an emotional response to what we value, indicating that the Dharma life is not just about learning techniques or changing our perception of the world but a whole-hearted engagement with the Three Jewels.  We will explore what faith really is along with the related emotions of devotion, reverence and gratitude; we will hear some stories about faith from the Buddhist tradition; and we will engage in devotional practices that help to strengthen the faculty of faith within us.

This is a two-day weekend retreat - 10.00 a.m. until 5.00 pm. on both Saturday and Sunday 19/20th January - held at the Buddhist Centre and led by Saccanama.

Please bring vegan food to share for lunch on both days.

This is a dana event, suggested donation of £50.

Come along on one of our Open Doors Saturdays when Nottingham Buddhist Centre opens from 10.30am-2.00pm. This is an opportunity to see and explore the Centre, meet people, and spend time in the shrine room. On each morning, we offer a number of activities -

Bodhi Yoga with Kshantika 11.00-12.00

Bodhi Yoga, a simple yoga-based body work practice to deepen our body, mind, heart connection to support our meditation and Buddhist practice on and off the cushion.

Meditation Drop in 12.00-13.00

A class open to all, whether you are new to meditation or already have a meditation practice. If you are new to meditation there will be an opportunity to learn one of the two meditation practices we teach: the Mindfulness of Breathing or the Metta Bhavana (Development of Loving Kindness). 

Feel free to drop in for any activity. No need to book.

Sangha Night - The Buddha Goes to his Death - Parinirvana Talk One

We are starting our Sangha night programme in 2019 with a series of events leading up to the Parinirvana Festival in February. The Parinirvana marks the final passing away of the Buddha when his physical body ceases to exist.

We shall have a series of talks looking at the Mahaparinibbana Sutta which is an account of the Buddha’s last few months as he goes to his death. It is one of the great Buddhist texts and gives a moving and illuminating picture of who the Buddha actually was and of his complete fearlessness and compassion as he prepares for his death.

The festival also gives us a chance to explore our own thoughts and feelings about death, a topic of central concern that touches us all.

New Year's Eve Celebration

New Year's Eve Celebration

Come and join us at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre to celebrate the end of the year together, sharing some food (bring some veggie treats to share), music and dancing (with some Latin vibes!). This a great opportunity to open this precious space we've been building up together as a Sangha with your family and friends. There will be meditation around 11 pm and we'll be performing a special puja at midnight to welcome in the New Year. This will be a one-off fundraising event towards the Nottingham Buddhist Centre.

Young Buddhists Group

Young Buddhists Group

We are a group of young people (35 and under) from the Nottingham Sangha who meet together monthly to meditate, drink tea, eat cake and talk about a variety of topics from a Buddhist perspective. Our group sessions are around Buddhist teaching and practice, and the practical effects they can have on our lives as young people living in the UK today.
