Young Buddhists Group

We’re Nottingham Buddhist Centre’s young Buddhist group. We get together monthly to meditate and practice the dharma together. That means meditation, tea, and talking about life’s biggest questions from a Buddhist perspective, and sometimes vegan cake. We try to approach things like ethics and meditation in ways that are practical but rooted in deep principles.

Young Buddhists Group - Exploring the 21st century Bodhisattva: consuming

Join us for the next evening in our series exploring the 21st century bodhisattva. This month we will discuss the topic of consuming, and how to bring stillness, simplicity and contentment into our lives.

This month we will be exploring the following -

Would the Buddha have a Facebook account? How do we practice the precepts online? Why do we turn off our phones on retreat?

The internet is an increasingly large part of our lives as 21st century (novice) Bodhisattvas. It offers us a chance to connect with Sangha all over the world, and access to an incredible amount of Dharma texts at our fingertips.

But navigating social media, "fake news", and a general abundance of information and advertising brings new challenges to our practice.

Join us for meditation, tea, and discussion on how to integrate the internet into our lives skilfully.

It’s show and tell time this month - please come with an idea or an example of something that you find beautiful (whatever that means to you). That could be music or a book or a film, even an object, anything goes. We’ll be set up to play music and film if you want to share a little sample. See you soon!

We’re meeting on Friday the 1st of March this month, 7:30-22:00 as usual. We’re going to be looking at self-Metta and how it relates to our general mental wellbeing, and discussing what comes up when we try to contact a sense of kindness towards ourselves. Meditation, tea and chat as always.

This month - January - we’re going to start looking at how we can apply Buddhism to some of the issues we face in the modern world. There are all sorts of new challenges thrown up by technology and the particular culture we live in, from stress and sleep loss to political polarisation. Though Buddhism arose in ancient India it still speaks to these problems. We’ll be looking at some of these topics in more detail later in the year as well. See you soon!

Young Buddhists Group

We are a group of young people (35 and under) from the Nottingham Sangha who meet together monthly to meditate, drink tea, eat cake and talk about a variety of topics from a Buddhist perspective. Our group sessions are around Buddhist teaching and practice, and the practical effects they can have on our lives as young people living in the UK today.
