Triratna International Gathering 2019: Alchemy of the Dharma

Adhisthana, 22-26 August 2019

Alchemy is the magical art of turning base materials into gold, a potent metaphor for what we are trying to do in our Dharma lives. How do we transform the ‘base material’ of ourselves, our spiritual community, and the wider society into ‘gold’, into ‘personal’ riches, shared riches and the sustaining riches of loving wisdom?

This biennial event at Adhisthana, UK, brings together large numbers of the Triratna Buddhist Community from around Europe for a feast of inspiration, stimulation and fun - all are welcome, including children.

Booking is now open: https://adhisthana.org/retreat/?ev=339

More details will be posted here as things firm up but there will certainly be:

  • excellent Dharma talks exploring the theme

  • music, artistic endeavours, philosophical explorations

  • study, discussion, hanging out, meditation, puja

  • Buddhafield’s structures for a variety of events

  • weather! hopefully pleasant as a mostly camping event, but every day is a fine day!

Sangha Weekend Retreat - Towards Insight

The Anapanasati Sutta (Mindfulness of Breathing) is the Buddha’s simplest set of instructions on how we can move systematically through the whole of our experience, sharpening our awareness as we go, until we reach full and complete enlightenment.

On this weekend we’ll explore the Sutta through input, guided practice, enquiry into what we are noticing in our direct experience, and devotion. We’ll see how the instructions, applied to our own unique conditioning, provides a rich backdrop to understanding and truly knowing ourselves, others and reality more fully.

Led by Singhashri.

This retreat will be held at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December - please attend for both days.

Arrive from 10.00 a.m. both days for a 10.30 start. Finish will be at 4.30 each day.

Please bring vegan food to share for lunch.

Suggested donation of £50 but please come and give what you can.

Teachings from the Sky-Like Yogi Milarepa - Sangha Weekend Retreat at Castleton

This is our annual residential retreat at Castleton in the Peak District. We will be joined by people from the Leicester Sangha and the retreat will be led by Khemasiri, Alobhin, Aryavacin and Saccanama.

We will be exploring the teachings of the great Tibetan Yogi Milarepa. Aryavacin writes -

‘Milarepa lived in eleventh century Tibet, and after a dark, unskillful youth, went on to live a radical Dharma life as a hermit in the Tibetan mountains, following an inspirational path of meditation and solitude dedicated to Enlightenment. Join us on this long weekend retreat, at the heart of the Peak District, dwelling in the wisdom from some of Milarepa's songs, enjoying his distinctive style of teaching and some humorous episodes from his life.’

Cost £120 which includes 3 nights accommodation and all meals etc. If this is too much for you, please contact us to talk about a concession and we will do what we can to accommodate you.

Milarepa Day Retreat with Manjuvajra

Milarepa was a Tibetan poet who lived in the wild mountains and devoted his life to meditation. Many people are inspired by this ideal - but is it relevant for us?

Milarepa taught various practices that were relevant to many people following different lifestyles - to lay people, monastics and other yogis - while at the same time encouraging them to follow a higher inspiration.

We will reflect on a series of songs that he sang to these different types of people, looking to see what we can learn from him in our own lives.

Manjuvajra was ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1974 and currently spends half of each year meditating in the Spanish mountains and the other half touring around the UK visiting Buddhist Centres and living on his narrow boat.

Suitable for anyone who has completed one of our Introduction to Buddhism and Meditation courses.

Please bring vegan food to share for lunch.

Suggested donation of £25 but please come and donate what you can.

Parinirvana Festival Practice Morning

One of the major Buddhist festivals, Parinirvana Day marks the final passing away of the Buddha. It is a time to reflect on the nature of the Buddha and also on our own impermanence and mortality.

This will be a morning of meditation, recitation of the Mahaparinibbana Sutta and puja.

If you wish to place photos of those you know who have died on the shrine, you are very welcome to do so. There will also be an opportunity to remember them during the puja.

Led by Satyamegha and Saccanama

'To Place the Heart Upon' - A Sangha retreat at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre
Jan

to Jan 20

'To Place the Heart Upon' - A Sangha retreat at the Nottingham Buddhist Centre

'To place the heart upon' is the literal translation of the term sraddha, more often translated just as faith. It plays a key role in the Buddhist life and suggests an emotional response to what we value, indicating that the Dharma life is not just about learning techniques or changing our perception of the world but a whole-hearted engagement with the Three Jewels.  We will explore what faith really is along with the related emotions of devotion, reverence and gratitude; we will hear some stories about faith from the Buddhist tradition; and we will engage in devotional practices that help to strengthen the faculty of faith within us.

This is a two-day weekend retreat - 10.00 a.m. until 5.00 pm. on both Saturday and Sunday 19/20th January - held at the Buddhist Centre and led by Saccanama.

Please bring vegan food to share for lunch on both days.

This is a dana event, suggested donation of £50.
