Invocation and Mantra of Padmasambhava by Kusaladevi

The Seven-Line Invocation/Prayer is chanted regularly in Tibet as a request for Padmasambhava, the great Guru, the Second Buddha, the Bodhisattva of Transformation, to appear. Stories say that Padmasambhava himself told people of Tibet to chant this seven line prayer if ever they needed his help.

As the Invocation tells us, Padmasambhava was born as an 8 year old boy, a fully Enlightened being, on a lotus in the middle of a lake (Padmasambhava literally means Lotus born). Since he was born with the Highest Siddhi, Awakening, Enlightenment, his main aim in life was to work for the liberation of all beings.

When we chant the Invocation and the Mantra, we are calling upon Padmasambhava's wisdom energies, to transform our own hearts and minds.

The Invocation and Mantra are both a part of a meditation practice I took on when I was ordained, so have a very special connection for me.

Seven-Line Invocation to Padmasambhava

In the north-west of the land of Urgyen

On the calyx of a lotus flower

O wonderous! The highest siddhi has been attained!

Thus Padmasambhava declares.

O you, who are encircled with an entourage of Dakinis

Following your example will I work.

You must come here and give me your blessing!
